Protecting your privacy when meeting people online
What to keep private, how to set up your profile safely and how to control who can contact you on a video chat app.
Privacy online is not about hiding; it is about choosing what you share and with whom. A little care when you set up your profile and when you talk to new people keeps you in control.
Set up your profile with care
- Name: a first name or nickname is enough. Your full name makes it easy to find you elsewhere.
- Photo: pick a clear, friendly photo of yourself that does not show your home, street, school or workplace.
- Bio and interests: share what you enjoy, not where you can be found. "Loves cricket and cooking" is great; "works at the bank on MG Road" is too much.
MeAndYou never shows your phone number to other people. You can edit your profile at any time from the Profile tab.
Decide who can reach you
On MeAndYou, messages and friend video calls only work between people who follow each other. A stranger from a random call cannot message you unless you follow them back. If someone you follow starts to make you uncomfortable, you can unfollow or block them at any time, and a blocked person can no longer find, match or contact you.
Be careful with links between your accounts
Many people use the same username or photo everywhere. That makes it easy for someone to connect your accounts and learn more about you than you intended. Consider using a different photo or username on apps where you meet strangers, and wait until you really know someone before sharing other social media handles.
Watch what you share in conversation
Small details add up. Your college, the area you live in, the name of your pet and the time you finish work might each seem harmless, but together they can identify you. When in doubt, keep it general.
Control notifications and permissions
MeAndYou asks for your camera and microphone only for video calls, and for notifications so you know when friends message or call. You can choose which notifications you get in the app's Settings, and you can change any permission in your phone's settings.
Know what happens to your data
We keep only what is needed to run the service, and video calls are not recorded. You can delete your account at any time from Profile, Settings, Delete account. Deleting removes your profile, photos, follows, history and chats. Our Privacy Policy explains exactly what we store and why, and our account deletion page explains what is removed.
Keep your phone secure
- Use a screen lock so nobody else can open your apps.
- Keep your phone and apps updated; updates often fix security problems.
- Never share the one-time code you receive when signing in. Anyone with that code can sign in as you.
Privacy is a habit, not a one-time setting. Take a minute now to check your profile and you will rarely need to think about it again. For more, see how to stay safe on random video chat.
