From strangers to friends: keeping in touch after a great call

How following, mutual friends, History, messages and friend video calls work, and how to keep a new friendship going respectfully.

Random video chat is built for meeting new people, but the best part is when a good conversation turns into a friendship. Here is how MeAndYou helps you keep in touch, and how to do it in a way that feels good for both people.

History: find people again

Everyone you talk to for more than 5 seconds is saved in your History tab. If you forgot to follow someone during the call, you can find them there afterwards and open their profile.

Follow the people you click with

Following is how you say "I'd like to stay in touch". You can follow someone during a call from their name at the top of the screen, from your History, or from their profile. They see that you followed them and can decide whether to follow you back.

Mutual followers are friends

When two people follow each other, they are friends on MeAndYou. Friends can:

  • Message each other in the Messages tab
  • Make friend video calls directly, without waiting to be matched
  • Get a notification when the other comes online, if they choose to

This mutual rule is deliberate: nobody can message or call you just because they met you once. You stay in control of who reaches you.

Keeping a new friendship respectful

  • Do not take silence personally. People are busy. If someone does not follow back or reply, let it go.
  • Ask before calling. A quick message like "Free for a call later?" is kinder than calling out of the blue.
  • Keep sharing at your own pace. Friendship online grows over time. There is no rush to share personal details or move to another app.
  • Unfollow or block whenever you need to. If a friendship stops feeling right, you can unfollow or block the person at any time.

Messages that keep a conversation going

The first message after a call is often the hardest. Keep it short and specific to what you talked about, so the other person remembers you:

  • "Hey, it was fun talking about cricket yesterday. Did your team win?"
  • "I tried that recipe you mentioned. You were right about the garlic!"
  • "Thanks for the movie suggestion. Halfway through and loving it."

Messages like these give the other person something easy to reply to. A plain "hi" often goes unanswered because it leaves all the work to them.

Friends can still cross a line

Most new friendships are exactly what they seem. Still, the same safety habits apply to friends as to strangers. Be careful if someone you have only known for a short time asks for money, pushes for intimate photos or calls, or wants you to keep the friendship secret. These are common signs of a scam; our guide to spotting online scams explains more. You can report a friend from their profile or from your chat with them, exactly as you would anyone else, and blocking them also removes them from your friends.

Plans and friend calls

Random video chat, following, History and messaging are free. Friend video calls and some extras depend on your plan; see our Pricing page for what each plan includes.
