Tips for better video call quality
Simple fixes for blurry video, choppy sound and dropped calls: lighting, sound, network and phone settings that make video chat look and sound better.
A good video call depends on three things: light, sound and connection. Small changes to each make a big difference to how you look and sound to the other person, and they take only a minute.
Light: face the window, not away from it
- Sit facing a window or a lamp so the light falls on your face. With a bright window behind you, the camera turns you into a dark silhouette.
- Soft, even light is best. Avoid a single bright bulb directly above you, which casts harsh shadows.
- Wipe the front camera lens. Phone cameras collect fingerprints and dust, which make video look hazy.
Sound: be heard clearly
- Speaker or earpiece: MeAndYou starts calls on the loudspeaker so you can hear the other person with the phone in front of you. Tap the speaker button at the top of the call to switch to the earpiece for a quieter, more private conversation.
- Earphones help most. Wired or Bluetooth earphones with a microphone reduce echo and background noise for both people. When they are connected, the call sound goes to them automatically.
- Mind the background noise. Fans, traffic and TV make it hard for the other person to hear you. A quieter corner helps more than speaking louder.
- Do not cover the microphone. It is usually at the bottom edge of the phone; holding the phone there muffles your voice.
Connection: keep video smooth
- A stable Wi-Fi connection usually works better than mobile data. If you use mobile data, a 4G or 5G signal with at least two bars is best.
- Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or away from thick walls, if video freezes.
- Close other apps that use the internet heavily, such as downloads or video streaming.
- If the network drops for a moment, MeAndYou tries to reconnect the call automatically and shows a banner while it does.
Phone: give the call room to run
- Video calls use more battery than most apps. Start with a reasonable charge, or keep the phone plugged in for long calls.
- Keep your phone and the MeAndYou app updated; updates often improve call quality.
- Allow camera and microphone access when the app asks. You can check these in your phone's Settings, under Apps.
Quick fixes for common problems
- The other person cannot hear me: check that your microphone is not muted in the call and that nothing covers the bottom of the phone. If earphones are connected, the sound uses their microphone.
- I cannot see the other person: their camera may be off, or their connection may be too weak for video. Give it a few seconds; the picture often returns once the connection settles.
- The video is dark or grainy: add more light in front of you. Phone cameras lower picture quality in dim rooms.
- I hear an echo: one of you is probably on the loudspeaker in a quiet room with the volume high. Turning the volume down or using earphones usually stops it.
- The call keeps dropping: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see which is steadier where you are.
Frame yourself well
Hold or prop the phone at eye level, about an arm's length away, with your face and shoulders in view. Looking up into a phone held low is the least flattering angle there is. A small phone stand is one of the best accessories for video chat.
